Parasites can enter in the body through contaminated food or water and settle in your digestive system. Parasites are also the one of the cause of diarrhea. Giardia lamblia is a parasite which affects the small intestine and cause diarrhea. It generally affects the individual who travel more. Contaminated drinking water is one of the cause through which this parasite is transmitted. Symptom like blood or pus in stool, are not associated with Giardia lamblia which generally happens in case of other bacteria and parasites. People are affected from this parasite generally shows the symptom like mild fever, abdominal pain etc.

Bacteria mostly affect the small intestine and colon and generally results in most serious cases of diarrhea. Enterocolitis is caused by bacteria which lead to inflammation of the small intestine and colon. Some of the symptoms of bacterial enterocolitis are inflammation of colon, abdominal pain, fever, blood in stool etc. Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella, Shigella, and EPEC are the bacteria which generally cause enterocolitis. E. coli bacteria are one of the causes of acute diarrhea. There are different kinds of E.coli bacteria in which some are pathogenic and some are non-pathogenic. Generally most of the bacteria are non-pathogenic and reside in intestine and colon. These non-pathogenic E.coli bacteria do not cause disease in the intestine but if they spread outside the intestine, then they cause infection in various body parts like urinary tract or in the blood stream.
