The pain which patients experience when they suffer from anal fissure is worsens with bowel movements. They always experience the anal pain at the time of bowel movements which may be brief and long lasting. Some times the pain become so severe, that patients are unwilling to have a bowel movement which may create complications and sometimes result in fecal implication and constipation.

Constipation may also result in the passage of a larger and harder stool that causes further trauma and makes the fissure worse. It also create problem at the time of urination and may cause frequent urination or the inability to urinate. Sometimes it may also result in bleeding, itching and discharge of pus. Discharge of pus from the fissure may also cause malodorous discharge. Anal fissures commonly bleed in infants.

So in brief we can say that the main sign and symptoms of anal fissure include:

  • Pain during bowel movement
  • Blood on the surface of stool
  • Blood on toilet tissue.
  • A crack in the skin that is visible when the anus is stretched slightly
  • Constipation, often with painful bowel movements
