Appendicitis: Tests And Diagnosis

Diagnosing the problem of appendicitis sometimes is difficult as abdominal pain may be cause due to various reasons. Various conditions due to which abdominal pain may occur similar to appendicitis problem include ectopic pregnancy, ovarian cysts, kidney stone, crohn’s disease etc.

So to diagnose appendicitis, your doctor will ask about your medical history, monitor the sign and symptoms of the problem and perform a complete examination of your abdomen. Appendicitis pain will often feel worse if the adjacent peritoneum is inflamed. Other signs your doctor may watch for include abdominal rigidity and a tendency to stiffen your abdominal muscles in response to pressure over the inflamed appendix (guarding).

Doctor also asked for some tests to confirm the reason of the abdominal pain. These tests generally involve blood test, urine test, imaging tests etc. By blood test, doctor generally checks for white blood cell count which indicates the condition of the infection. By urine test, doctor generally checks for a urinary infection or the kidney stone which may also be the reason of abdominal pain.

Doctor also asked for imaging tests which include abdominal X-ray or ultrasound. These tests are also necessary to confirm the problem of appendicitis or find the other causes of the abdominal pain. The most common test used for diagnosis is CT scan (computerized tomography). This test can also help in diagnosing the source of your pain, if appendix is not the cause of pain.
