Inflammation of the appendix is known as appendicitis. It is caused due to blockage in the opening from the appendix into the cecum. This blockage is generally happened when a thick mucus build-up or when the stool enters into the appendix from the cecum. This deposited stool and mucus becomes hard like rock and block the opening. This rock like hard thing is known as fecalith.

One other reason of inflammation of appendix is the swelling in the lymphatic tissue which cause blockage in the appendix due to which bacteria start begins to invade the wall of the appendix and finally results in inflammation.

An initial rupture of the appendix followed by spreading of bacteria outside the appendix becomes the cause of appendicitis. The cause of such a rupture is unclear, but it may relate to changes that occur in the lymphatic tissue. Appendix can rupture when the infection spread through the wall of appendix through out the abdomen.

Sometimes body automatically heals the problem of appendicitis, if the infection does not spread through out the abdomen. In that case surgical treatment is not required and inflammation, pain and symptoms may disappear automatically. This generally happens in case of elderly patients, when antibiotics are used.
