Bacteria mostly affect the small intestine and colon and generally results in most serious cases of diarrhea. Enterocolitis is caused by bacteria which lead to inflammation of the small intestine and colon. Some of the symptoms of bacterial enterocolitis are inflammation of colon, abdominal pain, fever, blood in stool etc. Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella, Shigella, and EPEC are the bacteria which generally cause enterocolitis. Bacteria generally affect the people who drink contaminated water or eat contaminated food.

Sometimes antibiotic treatment is also the cause of diarrhea. Clostridium difficile bacteria are responsible for causing the infection pseudomembranous colitis, in colon at the time of antibiotic treatment. A strain of E.coli bacteria also causes enterocolitis by producing toxins. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is developed by E.coli bacteria which results in abdominal pain, fever and sometimes kidney failure, usually in children.

Diarrhea cause by bacterial infection generally shows the symptom like abdominal cramps, vomiting, fever etc. Diarrhea is generally watery and frequent. In some serious cases it shows pus and blood in the stool.
