Tummy ache being one of the commonest problems that arise in childhood, it is important to know about this problem so that the parents can take suitable action. There are many causes for tummy ache and most of them are not serious.

To find out the cause of the pain, the pattern of the pain has to be followed. The main areas to consider are infection, constipation, urinary infections, anxiety, food sensitivity etc. Mild infection or flu may cause abdominal glands to enlarge and this may cause the pain the child’s stomach. Mild pain killers can be given to get relief from the pain.

• If the pain is followed by fever, the symptoms are similar to that of appendicitis. The child should be referred to the doctor who may then treat the child.
• The child may also complain of tummy ache to express his anxiety. This shows that the child is under some stress and the parents should try to know the cause.
• Migraine may be another reason for this tummy ache. Though this condition is not very common, it causes abdominal pain in children in the earlier stages.
• Food sensitivity can cause tummy ache which can be hard to track down.

If the child vomits with yellow or green bile, he should be taken to the doctor. A moving pain can also signify serious trouble. A pain which lasts more than six hours can be termed as acute and should be treated with medical help.
