Constipation means reduction in the frequency of bowel movements. People take the concept of constipation differently. Some think that constipation is the infrequent passing of stools, hard stools or trouble in passing stools. Constipation may occur from a poor diet plan and bowel habits, traveling, medications and pain killers, pregnancy, intestinal and obstructions. To find out the actual cause of constipation, your health care provider can ask you various question, take a physical exam and operate some lab tests on you. He can ask:
- Your normal bowel habits.
- How much difficulty you are facing in passing stool
- The last time you passed stool
- Do you feel any pain in abdominal or anal
- Able to pass gas freely
- Able to feel the pain with your finger
- Notice any changes in body temperature
- Taken any medication
- Any changes in appetite
- Do you often take laxatives or an enema? If so, then how many tablets per day?
- Any changes in body temperature
- Feel relax after passing stool
- Are you pregnant
These above are some of the questions that can be asked by you from your health care provider. After asking the questions, he will examine your abdomen, anus, nervous system, thyroid gland and musculoskeletal system. The examination will be conducted only after analyzing your answers to questions. He will then decide which tests need to be performed. The most common tests include:
- Examine a stool sample under a microscope
- Full blood count and blood film
- If hypothyroidism will be suspected then thyroid will be tested
- X-ray of chest and abdomen
- Barium enema will reveal the size of colon
The list for conducting tests for constipation is not limited to here only. Your health care provider can recommend you many other tests also. Before opting for any of these tests yourself, it is better to consult the specialized doctor.
