Constipation is a common digestive system trouble in which an individual has to experience difficulty in passing faeces or dry stool. It can affect any person but mostly older people and children encounter this problem. The reason for the occurrence of constipation in children and elder people more is that the children take junk foods and low fiber diet in quantity whereas elder people have to prefer soft food which contains low fiber because of the absence of teeth. The symptoms of constipation include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdomen swells and pains and weight loss etc.

Constipation is of various types like common constipation, chronic constipation, travel-related constipation, age-related constipation, pregnancy-related constipation and functional constipation. It ca occur because of the poor diet, lack of physical exercise, medications, change in lifestyle or inadequate liquid. There are various effective constipation treatments that can ease the symptoms of constipation.

Dietary Fiber (bulk-forming laxatives)
Those who are suffering from constipation should eat fiber rich and it includes fruits, vegetables, wheat, oat bran, synthetic methyl cellulose and polycarbophil. Fiber is one of the prime materials for treating the constipation. It is made up of plants that are indigestible by human gastrointestinal tract. There are many types of fiber sources that keep water inside the intestine. In the beginning, the intake of fiber should be low and after one or two weeks it can be increased until and unless the desired effect on stool would not be achieved.

Lubricant laxatives
It contains mineral oil that stays in the intestine, paints the stool particles and stops the removal of water from the stool. This treatment is used for short term period only as long term period can cause disadvantages. The other laxatives include saline laxatives, emollient laxatives (stool softener), hyperosmolar laxatives and stimulant laxatives.

There are some home remedies also for the constipation treatment:

  • Ginger tea is quite effective for constipation as it helps in starting the bowel movements.
  • Regular exercises can also be a great reliever for constipation.
  • Add a little sugar or a spoon of honey in a glass of milk for twice a day.
  • Have 2 apples without peeling on an empty stomach in the morning.
  • Try to apply 3 to 4 drops of lukewarm castor oil over the navel at night so that the stool can be passed in the morning easily.
  • Eat chopped onion.
  • Drink one glass of fresh carrot juice.

The Ayurvedic remedies for curing constipation are:

  • Add 3-4 teaspoons of Abhyarishta in small amount of water twice a day after every meal.
  • Add 1-2 tablespoons of Panchasakar churna in lukewarm water and drink the mixture.
  • Take 1-2 tablets of Virechani with warm water or milk at bed time.
  • Take 1-2 tablets of Lashunadi Vati with lukewarm water after every meal.

In addition to home and Ayurvedic remedies, a person with constipation can follow some yoga asanas as well like:

  • Pawan mukta asana
  • Vajra asana
  • Yog mudra
  • Dhanur asana
