Diarrhea - A Common Tummy Problem

Diarrhea is a common problem of the tummy in which patient generally produce loose and watery stool. This disease generally causes dehydration due to which body lacks the essential fluid which is required to function properly. This disease is generally dangerous in case of children and elderly people and must be treated as soon as possible.
This disease can happened in any age and after proper medication generally patient get relief in two to three days. But if problem remains more than three to four days then it may be a symptom of other problems.
There are various causes of diarrhea:
- Infection cause by Bacteria - Salmonella, Campylobacter, Escherichia coli and Shigella are few types of viruses which generally cause diarrhea. Eating or drinking contaminated food or water can cause bacterial infection which results in diarrhea.
- Infection cause by Virus – Like bacteria some viruses also cause diarrhea such as Norwalk virus, rotavirus, herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus, and viral hepatitis.
- Food intolerance – Some people are not able to digest some food products like lactose, etc can also be the cause of diarrhea.
- Parasites – Diarrhea can also be caused by parasite that can enter in the body through contaminated food or water and remains in our digestive system. Parasites like Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium and Entamoeba histolytica are the major cause of diarrhea.
- Reaction of medicines – Some times reaction of medicines such as antibiotics, blood pressure medications, and antacids containing magnesium also causes diarrhea.
- Intestinal diseases - Some of the intestinal diseases like inflammatory bowel disease or coeliac disease are the cause of diarrhea.
- Functional bowel disorders like irritable bowel syndrome which effects the normal functioning of intestine can also cause diarrhea.
