Diarrhea is generally best treated with home care. However, it is necessary to get medical help if it persists beyond five days and if the patient becomes dehydrated, as evidence by dry mouth or skin, less or nil urination, dizziness, dark colored urine or excessive thirst.
It is also important to see a doctor if you are having severe rectal or abdominal pain, bloody stools, signs of dehydration despite drinking ample amount of water or a temperature of more than 101F. You should visit the hospital emergency department if you are suffering from severe diarrhea with high fever and appear very sleepy and act usual.
Diarrhea can lead quickly to dehydration, in children and infants. It is necessary to call the doctor, if diarrhea persists for more than 24 to 48 and if the baby has high fever, black stools, drowsy, irritated, has a sunken appearance to the abdomens, and has skin that does not flatten when pinched and released.
