Pyelonephritis can often happen because of the urinary tract inflammation. It especially occurs in the existence of rare or continuous backflow of urine from the bladder into the ureters or kidney pelvis (vesicoureteric reflux). Pyelonephritis is distributed as follows:

• Acute unfussy pyelonephritis (sudden occurrence of kidney infection)
• Chronic pyelonephritis (a long-standing inflammation that does not apparent)

However, cystitis (bladder infection) is not unique, pyelonephritis happens very rare. The risk can be elevated due to any kind of history of cystitis, renal papillary necrosis, kidney stones, vesicoureteric reflux, or obstructive uropathy. Not only this, the risk can also be raised if there is a history of chronic or repeated urinary tract inflammation and the main cause of infection could be violent kind of bacteria.

Acute pyelonephritis can be serious in the elder people and the people who are having immunosuppressed like people those have cancer or AIDS. Normally, kidney infection crops up when bacteria come in the urinary tract through the urethra and start increasing. Bacteria from an infection anywhere in the body can also stretch through the bloodstream to the kidneys. It is very rare to get caught of kidney infection through this way. But its occurrence can be happened in few conditions such as when a foreign body like an artificial joint or heart valve gets inflamed.
