Brainerd diarrhea is a syndrome of extreme onset of water diarrhea that exists either for 4 weeks or more than that. The patients who are suffering from Brainerd diarrhea has to go through the frequent explosives like water diarrhea and mostly featured by urgency and fecal incontinence. Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) contains two active ingredients- bismuth and salicylate (aspirin). Bismuth compounds are effective only in traveler’s diarrhea and the treatment of H.pylori. It is not clear how bismuth subsalicylate would work with the only exception of traveler diarrhea. It is like an antibiotic that affects bacteria causing diarrhea. Bismuth may lower the water secretion by the intestine and anti-inflammatory salicylate reduces the water secretion.

Basically there are four types of diarrhea. They are osmotic diarrhea, secretory diarrhea, motility-related diarrhea and inflammatory diarrhea.
- Osmotic diarrhea - Generally occurs when there is an excessive loss of water due to osmotic load. This can occur when there is maldigestion such as celiac disease or pancreatic disease where the nutrients are left in the lumen.
