Self-Care Measures for Diarrhea

Diarrhea is an unpleasant digestive disorder that is caused due to viral infections. When diarrhea persists, the patient may become dehydrated, since it causes loss of significant amount of water and salts from the body. There are various self-care measures that a patient suffering from diarrhea can take to prevent dehydration.
It is very important to drink plenty of liquids such as water, clear soda, broths, and juices while recovering. But avoid alcohol, milk and caffeine. As the bowel movements returns to normal, it is necessary to add semisolid and low fiber foods such as toast, eggs, rice or chicken.
Children pose special problems because of the increased risk of dehydration. They should be offered liquids frequently; however, solutions such as Pedialyte may be more appealing than water.
Diary products, high fiber foods should be strictly avoided as they will make diarrhea worse. You can continue your regular activities even if you are mildly ill, but strenuous exercises should be avoided, since it increases the risk of dehydration.
