Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) contains two active ingredients- bismuth and salicylate (aspirin). Bismuth compounds are effective only in traveler’s diarrhea and the treatment of H.pylori. It is not clear how bismuth subsalicylate would work with the only exception of traveler diarrhea. It is like an antibiotic that affects bacteria causing diarrhea. Bismuth may lower the water secretion by the intestine and anti-inflammatory salicylate reduces the water secretion.

Absorbents are the compound that absorbs liquid. The water is confined in small intestine if the oral absorbent is consumed orally and it also makes the stool of diarrhea less watery. The bacteria generate toxic chemicals that are confined by the oral absorbents that can cause the small intestine to secrete liquid. In any way, the significance of poisonous bind is not clear.
