Early diagnosis of toddler diarrhea is very much important as any ignorance result in more complications and sometimes become life threatening. Deferential diagnoses of toddler’s diarrhea include the diagnosis of following problems:

Children may have allergies to different food which causes vomiting, diarrhea and sometimes blood in stool. It may result in failure to grow and loss of protein results in hypoproteinemia and edema. It may also cause, if there is a family history of atopy, eczema, reactive airway disease, urticaria, and allergic rhinitis.

Lactose intolerance may also lead to diarrhea in small children. Lactase deficiency due to family history is rare in young children. Genetic lactase deficiency is rare in young children. Lactase deficiency following gastroenteritis is usually momentary and generally cures within two weeks.

Diarrhea may also cause due to giardia infection which may lead to gas and abdominal swelling. It is usually waterborne and can have foul smell with watery stools. It may develop into chronic condition and diagnosed by inspecting stool or duodenal fluid for cysts.

Cryptosporidium is recently been recognized as a worldwide cause of diarrhea in all age groups. It may lead to abdominal pain, watery and foul smelling stools.

Some times malabsorption also results in diarrhea in which child may have frequently irritable and loss of appetite, stools are generally foul smelling and greasy, poor weight gain and child may have abdominal swelling, child is often weak and displays decreased activity and may cause anemia, hypoproteinemia and vitamin deficiencies.
