The area in or around the abdomen is commonly called as the tummy and a pain of any sort in that area between the chest and the legs is called as tummy ache. Usually the cause is minor and may never be found, it can debilitate the patient depending upon the cause of the ache.
Causes:
Only in one in ten cases of tummy ache is the cause found out by diagnosis. However in addition to minor causes like stress, constipation or mesenteric adenitis which is the inflammation of the lymph glands, there may be serious causes for tummy ache as well. They may be anything like:
• gastroenteritis,
• appendicitis, and
• Urinary tract infections.
Tummy ache may also result from a strain to the abdomen, intestinal obstruction, hernia, sickle cell anaemia, migraine, pneumonia or hip problems etc.
Symptoms:
The occurrence of the pain, longevity and area being affected can give a strong clue to the cause of the pain as well. As for a severe pain in the lower right side of the abdomen, we can get to know easily that the cause for this is appendicitis. A pain that is relieved when bowels are opened will probably be due to the irritable bowel syndrome.
Diagnosis and treatment
Most tummy aches go in a few hours, in some cases with doctor’s help if required. The child should not be fed if he has a tummy ache. Simple painkillers can be administered for a mild tummy ache.

Interesting site. You are right. Most stomach aches are not diagnosed. I suffered for six years before scare tissue from a previous surgery closed off my colon and had to have emergency surgery. I was seeing doctors all the while.
