Understanding Constipation

Constipation is very common bowel problem among the people. The problem of constipation include infrequent stools, difficult in passing stool, people generally got harder stool or sense of emptying after the bowel movement.  There are many causes of constipation. The problem of constipation can also occur when the stool hardens in the rectum and prevents the passage of other stool. It can also alternately occur with diarrhea.

Generally with the increase in age, may decrease the number of bowel movements. Approximately 95% of the adults have bowel movements around 21 times in a week, means thrice in a day. This condition would be considered as normal in most of the people. The most usual pattern is one bowel movement a day. Generally most of the people do not have same number of bowel movements at each day.

In terms of medical language, less than three bowels per week are defined as the problem of constipation. Less than one bowel movement in a week is defined as a severe constipation. No bowel movements for two to three days do not harm you physically but it can may create mental distress in some people.

Constipation can also be chronic or acute. Acute Constipation is generally started suddenly and requires urgent medical attention as it may be cause due to any serious illness. Constipation with some serious symptoms such as rectal bleeding, abdominal pain and cramps, nausea and vomiting, and involuntary weight loss also requires urgent medical attention. Where as in case of chronic constipation, urgent medical attention may not required if it can be cure after taking simple measures.
