Basically there are four types of diarrhea. They are osmotic diarrhea, secretory diarrhea, motility-related diarrhea and inflammatory diarrhea.

  1. Osmotic diarrhea - Generally occurs when there is an excessive loss of water due to osmotic load. This can occur when there is maldigestion such as celiac disease or pancreatic disease where the nutrients are left in the lumen.
  2. Secretory diarrhea- Occurs when the intestines release water and salt into the stool. The most common cause of this type of diarrhea is a cholera toxin that stimulates the secretion of anions, especially chloride ions.
  3. Motility-related diarrhea - Occurs when the motility of the gastrointestinal tract is unusually high. When the consumed food moves too fast, there is not enough time for sufficient water and nutrients to be absorbed. This may occur due to a complication of menstruation or a vagotomy or diabetic neuropathy.
  4. Inflammatory diarrhea - It occurs when there is damage to the mucosal lining or brush border, which leads to a loss of protein-rich fluids, and a reduced capacity to absorb these lost fluids. Features of osmotic, secretory as well as motility diarrhea can be found in this type of diarrhea. It is caused due to bacterial infections, viral infections, parasitic infections, or autoimmune problems such as inflammatory bowel disease.
