Viral Infection: Cause of Acute Diarrhea

One of the major causes of acute diarrhea is viral infection. Viral gastroenteritis is one of the viral infections of the stomach and small intestine, which is the most common cause of acute diarrhea. Nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps are some of the viral infection symptoms.

Viral infections generally cure in 48 to 72 hours. Patients suffering from viral gastroenteritis have little fever and do not have blood or pus in their stool, which are shown in case of bacterial infection.

Viral gastroenteritis is a both epidemic and sporadic disease. Sporadic diarrhea is a type of diarrhea which is cause by different viruses and can be spread from one person to another. The epidemic diarrhea is generally caused by calciviruses which is transmitted through contaminated food and from one person to another.

Various viruses which causes diarrhea are as follows:

1) Rotavirus is a type of virus which generally causes the diarrhea in infants.
2) Norwalk virus is also causes epidemic diarrhea which affects both adults and children.
3) Adenovirus infections generally affect the people of all age groups.
